Bejeweled BBoy Gloves
Left with off-cuts of an old black jumper and a handfull of crystals, what was I to do? Voila! Gloves, à la Michael Jackson, but in a more modern form. As the hand moves, curls and bends, the crystals move against each other like the scales of an armadillo. Such large crystals set side-by-side bounce light off them like mini mirrors. Jackson’s own crystal glove and matching crystal socks were provided to him to enable his fast dance movements to be easily seen and appreciated; with his extremities thus illuminated, as his feet and hands flew through the air, vast audiences in arenas could see and be wowed by his skill. As his career flourished, Jackson’s crystal glove became synonymous with the man himself. Show anyone between the ages of 7 and 70 a picture of the crystal glove and surely they will have knowledge of Jackson the artist and his art! No wonder then that the Swarovski-crystal-studded glove that he wore on his 1984 Victory Tour was bought for $190,000 in 2010 – Over 10 times its estimated value!
